Corticosteroids are the most prescribed topical medication for inflammation-related skin problems, but are only effective in temporarily suppressing overactive immune responses and reducing skin redness. However, inflammatory skin conditions require long-term treatment, and prolonged use of corticosteroids are associated with numerous side effects, including damage to underlying skin tissue. More specifically, corticosteroids reduce the production of Type IV collagen, a crucial structural protein at the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ). The DEJ acts as the connective interface between the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and the layer beneath it (dermis), playing a vital role in regulating skin cell activity. The loss of DEJ integrity leads to the abnormal function of skin cells. This abnormality increases sensitivity to external stimuli, further aggravating the existing skin condition.
